“Why me? Why didn’t I get the job? Why didn’t I get the promotion? Why didn’t the marriage last? Why am I sick? Why am I (fill in your why)?
“Why me? Why am I so lucky to have this job? Why am I so lucky to have this great relationship? Why am I so lucky to (fill in your why)?
I am sure you’ve asked yourself the ‘Why Me’ question from time to time on when ‘good’ or ‘bad’ things come your way. I certainly have asked myself that in the past both personally and professionally. Now, I’ve learned to live in the ‘why’ space of my life. Why do I want to live in a beautiful home? Why do I want to do meaningful work inspiring millions to live their dream life while I live mine? Why do I want to be in a loving and committed relationship? I feel as though I’ve turned into a two-year-old, why, why, why.
So why is why so important? Knowing your why you want to experience something connects you deeper to the feeling place of having it, being it, living it.
It’s easy to say you want to be rich, but what does rich mean to you? What does being rich look like to you? It’s easy to say you want to be in a great relationship, but what does a great relationship mean to you? What does it feel like to you to be in that relationship? Several years ago I watched a Ted Talk “How great leaders inspire action,” by Simon Sinek’s and began to focus on the why both personally and professionally in my life. Simon says in his talk ‘people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it’ and then gave great examples. I was inspired, moved, and simply excited to incorporate it in my professional life. It wasn’t too long later that I realized asking myself ‘why’ personally would enhance my life as well.
For the next week I invite you to discover your why by:
Asking your ‘why’ on:
- Why do I want meaningful work?
- Why do I want to be healthy?
- Why do I want to be in a loving relationship?
- Why do I want to be, do, and have (fill in the blank)
Asking your ‘why’ what it looks like?
- What does doing work I love look like?
- What does being healthy look like to me?
- What does being in a loving relationship look like to me?
Asking your ‘why’ on how does it feel?
- How would I feel to be doing work I love?
- How would I feel to be healthy?
- How would I feel to be in a loving relationship?
By knowing what your ‘why’ looks like and feels like allows you deeper clarity and thus bringing it to fruition quicker. When you pay attention to your why, you will be able to identify if you are on the right path or if you have veered off course. Frequently go back to the why you do what you do, why you want what you want, why you are why you are as it will allow you to revise anything needing revision and move quicker into living your best life. Use your reason why when you are feeling defeated to refocus on exactly why you want what you want. Go for it!
Mostly I want you to know you are deserving of living the ‘why’ in your life simply because you are you. Enhance who you are rather than change. Dream big, Live big, and Love big.
Until next time – why? Why not!!
PS – make sure to watch the Simon Sinek video below, you will thank me for it. I watch it often. 🙂
I am enough
