What’s going on in your world right now? Are you smiling because you are celebrating what is going on in your life? Are you smiling because you are trying to hide your sorrow from others? Are you currently unable to smile because you are facing a challenge that you cannot find a reason to smile? Or, do you find yourself somewhere in the middle of these choices?
For me, I smile a lot. Mostly it’s because I live in appreciation and that makes me smile. I focus on the little things in my life that make me glad to be alive. Yesterday, was a day of putting a smile on to make me feel better. I just became part of a Keep Smiling Movement and was headed to get my picture taken for it. An hour before I left, I received some news that hit me hard and I was tearful and stepped into a puddle of fear. I considered cancelling, I mean who wants their pic taken after they’ve been crying? And then I decided it was just what I needed to do, to go do something that would remind me of the power of a smile. My fear of the unknown subsided and I returned to a state of appreciation.
Wherever you find yourself today, honor those feelings. Sometimes when we are in celebration we can feel guilty because we know those we love are going through a hard time. And then when we are going through a hard time, we can feel guilty for not being able to feel celebration for others that are in a good space. A smile isn’t about who is doing better than another. A smile is a sign of hope that wherever you are right now, you are okay. A smile is a sign of courage that whatever you are facing right now doesn’t define you. A smile is a sign of the current joy in your life or the knowingness that you deserve joy in your life, so you smile at that possibility of what is to come. A smile is brave. A smile is beautiful. A smile is a statement to yourself and others that you’ve made it through the challenge, or that you will make it through the challenge. A smile is so much more that just an image of happiness. It is happiness personified and sadness comforted. It’s certainly easier to smile when life is showing up in a loving and kind way, and yet you can begin to smile through the rough spots too.
Moving forward, I invite you to show up in your life with a smile by:
Noticing others who are smiling. Have you ever noticed when people smile their eyes tend to have a twinkle in them? Look for the smiles you see and allow them to inspire you to smile.
Being okay that you don’t feel like smiling. Again, it’s easy to smile when we are in a happy state. Set the intention each morning to focus on smiling. Think of things that make you smile – puppies and kittens, a baby’s laughter, a favorite movie. Anything that brings you a little comfort in your day is worthy of a slight smile even if it’s only for a moment. Every little smile will begin to bring you back to hope. Smiling does not mean to not feel your sorrowful feelings, but rather your smile is an invitation to start the journey back to feeling better.
Intentionally smiling: Start your morning with a smile. As you look in the mirror getting your morning started, smile back at yourself. Say thank you for showing up to live this life…the beautiful parts of it along with the messy parts of it. Smile back at your mirror reflection and say a kind word or perhaps apologize to yourself for how hard you are on yourself.
Mostly, my wish for you this week is to know that when someone thinks about you, you bring a smile to their face and you are so worthy of that smile.
