Do you see the world as a friendly place or a scary place? Truly sit down and ask yourself that question. Pay attention to your thoughts, words and actions as they are telling on how you feel about the world.
I believe the world is a beautifully messy friendly place. It shines bright in its imperfectly perfect self. It celebrates the wonders of the world and cries during tragedies. It loves deeply and also has space for deep fear. It offers every possible human emotion and allows you to choose what to focus on.
I choose to focus on the good in the world while knowing there is conflict and people who live in peril. I choose to focus on the celebrations going on in the world while sending love to those steeped in fear. I choose to focus on love rather than fear. I choose to focus on solutions rather than problems. Those choices allow me to remain positive in an environment if chosen, I could succumb to fear. Natural disasters and man-made tragedy are certainly part of this world as is beautiful sunrises, the northern lights, smiles and laughter. Remaining focused on goodness, on positive solutions and on love doesn’t negate the existence of injustice, violence or tragedy, yet it does allow me to remain in a space of hope rather than despair.
One of the ways I remain vigilant is through free hugs, specifically Global Free Hugs. After feeling a profound shift in myself and others giving out hugs, I decided to bring the world together to hug it out. This past weekend was Global Free Hugs 10. People from all over the world joined me and Positive Focus in spreading kindness through the simple gesture of a free hug. It’s my favorite weekend of the year. Through free hugs I’ve been able to celebrate birthdays with people, anniversaries, weddings and new jobs. Through free hugs I’ve been able to comfort people on the loss of a loved one, a pet or a job. I’ve shared smiles, laughter and yes, even tears with people through free hugs.
Why do I continue to do free hugs locally and globally? It’s a way for me to let you know that YOU matter to me, you matter to the world and most importantly you matter to YOU.
Are you ready to see the world as friendly, as loving and yes as beautifully messy? Know you ARE the world. You are 1 on the 7 billion people in the world and the more kindness you share in your life, the kinder the world will be. The more smiles you share in your life, the world will smile brighter. The more compassion you share with those in your life, the more compassion will be in the world. Your biggest impact on the world doesn’t have to change 7 billion people. In truth, you don’t even need to change 5 billion, 2 billion or 1 billion people. By striving to be your best self each day, and yes sometimes each moment, you are the change you seek in the world. And my dear friend, that is simply enough.
Go out there and shine you, as that will do the world…a whole lot of good.
